Japanese to English In-house Translator

Our work sees us partner with the world’s most renowned consumer packaged goods companies, suppliers and academic institutions. Building on our success, we are looking for a Japanese Translator to join our Digital Publishing team to support the continued success of Mintel Japan Reports.

This opportunity will offer you the chance to develop your expertise as a linguist, specialising in translation with advanced technological skills, as well as building knowledge on market trends and consumer behaviour.

Responsibilities

  • Translating Mintel content from Japanese to English, ensuring that the target text is with maximal fluency and free of errors, literal translations and cumbersome expressions that are directly transferred, so the Japan content is readily comprehensible to English-speaking readers
  • Proofreading, editing, revising and finalising translated content including visual charts to ensure format (e.g. font and structure) and language (e.g. spelling, grammar, punctuation, industry-specific terminology) accuracy
  • Ensuring that all content across Mintel Japanese pages are consistent and in line with Mintel style
  • Performing on-demand translation tasks from Japanese to English
  • Preparing, managing and maintaining the Japanese language materials (including Term base, Style Guides, Translation Memories) up to the quality standards and up to date
  • Collaborating with other translators and localisation specialists to resolve questions on terminology and language matters
  • Liaising effectively with analysts in different offices to discuss any unclear points
  • Working as part of the team to ensure all departmental deadlines are met
  • Post-editing machine translation
  • Reviewing freelancers’ translation
  • Participating in the development of new and improved working process

Education

Qualifications required for this position:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Translation or relevant subjects

Language

  • Proficiency in English and Japanese, with excellent ability to write in Japanese and English fluently and idiomatically
  • Japanese Language Proficiency Test N1 qualification preferred

What We'd Like From You

  • Heightened attention to detail
  • Good command of CAT tools, especially Trados is a strong advantage
  • Knowledge of TMS and Translation Quality Assurance is desired
  • Knowledge of using Monday.com is desired
  • Comfortable with digital work on an in-house CMS
  • Previous translation/proofreading experience in the market research/business filed is a plus but not essential
  • Ability to learn new localisation tools/applications and publishing formats/styles quickly
  • Ability to respond and work effectively to changing priorities
  • Ability to analyse the macrostructure of the content and its overall coherence; read critically and ask questions
  • Ability to cross-reference open resources for subject background information
  • Strong commercial awareness
  • Strive for continuous improvement
