As a member of the Laredo Project providing pro bono legal services to migrants detained at the border, the Interpreter facilitates verbal communication between attorneys and detainees at the detention facility. In some instances, the Interpreter may also provide translation of documents.

Ability to work a Tuesday through Thursday schedule.

Responsibilities

  • High school diploma or equivalent. College (or some college) degree preferred.
  • Fluent in Spanish and English.
  • Ability to read and write in Spanish and English.
  • Ability to simultaneously interpret and render oral translation in real time.
  • Possess exceptional listening skills.
  • Ability to sit/stand for hours in a small room with multiple people in a detention center.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills to effectively translate graphic and detailed accounts of trauma and persecution.
  • Experience providing interpretative services preferred.
